DEVELOPMENT VOLUNTEER PROGRAM AND OUR AFFILLIATES
The SLOC has a continuing volunteer program, whereby we source assistance
on behalf of our local affiliates from our overseas umbrella associations.
Our affiliates may recall the sterling efforts of Shannon Butters,
a Canadian volunteer. In 2006, as part of MELBOURNE 2006 COMMONWEALTH
GAMES, the Government of Victoria in Australia, conducted a Sports
Development Volunteers Program. Volunteers were placed in thirty
targeted Commonwealth Countries to provide hands-on advice and assistance
with local sports development. The program was fully funded by the
Victorian Government and managed by the AUSTRALIAN SPORTS COMMISSION
(ASC).
When all the local Commonwealth Games Associations / NOCs were asked
to identify the activities and areas of development that would most
benefit their nation, Saint Lucia identified the ST. LUCIA NETBALL
ASSOCIATION to receive this assistance. There was a clear development
focus on coach education and development, of the well established
network of national netball coaches, who would receive on site training
under a training of trainers program. Saint Lucia’s team were
the winners of the last Organization of Eastern Caribbean States
(OECS) U23 Netball Championships with netball coach, Wayne Benti.,
as well as the Helen of the West Championship. The Netball Association
was thus quite prepared to utilize the full support of the volunteer
made available through this SLOC program.
In her position as volunteer coach for the ST. LUCIA NETBALL ASSOCIATION,
Michelle Cheah coached the primary school and some local coaches,
while also assisting in coaching the island’s national team.
From her first few weeks of settling in, she was able to make contact
with a few of the major players in the local and regional netball
scene, including the Barbados based CARIBBEAN NETBALL ASSOCIATION.
Based on this she then reported to the SLOC, with a critical assessment
of local netball structures and operations.
Michelle also assisted in the Ministry of Sports’ drive to
reintroduce and revitalize the primary schools netball program,
during which the Ministry hosted the 2006 Primary Schools District
and Inter District Netball Championships, with modified rules to
suit the age group and level of play. Seven teams from education
districts 6, 7, and eight took part with three teams making it to
the finals: Vieux Fort Primary, Blanchard Combined and Piaye Combined.
